MESSAGE DELIVERED - brief 3 for Falmouth University - WEEKS 9 - 12
BACKGROUND
As designers it’s important for us not to work in a vacuum and to engage with the creative community around us, particularly in our local area. However, it can also be difficult to understand what makes our immediate surroundings special, particularly when they are very familiar to us. For this project we want you to look at the place in which you live with fresh eyes and to explore the aspects that make it unique.
MY TASK
Explore and document a geographical area within your local environment and find ways to express its character. You should start with the following exercises:
Identify your chosen geographic location. Make sure that it is nearby and accessible. Specify the parameters of this place on a map.
Investigate the location on foot and document your explorations using a variety of media such as notes, drawings, photographs, audio recordings and video.
Be prepared, plan and visit several times. Consider stopping by at different times to reflect on how the place changes throughout the day.

For my final brief, I have chosen to craft a visual narrative portraying various scenes of my hometown. Through a short animated sequence, I aim to capture the essence of different seasons and times of the day, accompanied by corresponding ambient sounds. Specifically, this animation revolves around the view from my terrace, focusing on the western horizon.
Situated between my residence and the nearby settlement known as Sajmište lies a remnant of a swamp and a small river named Velicanka, teeming with diverse wildlife. Pheasants, foxes, snakes, martens, this ecosystem is rich in biodiversity. Experiencing the juxtaposition of natural sounds, such as the call of a pheasant, against the backdrop of urban noises like a passing train creates a surreal yet beautiful contrast. I harbor a genuine hope that this picturesque meadow, with its swamp and river, remains untouched by the looming prospect of unsightly apartment buildings.
Beyond its natural beauty, the view of the western horizon holds profound metaphorical significance. For myself and many compatriots, this horizon symbolizes a crossroads between worlds—Serbia and Eastern Orthodoxy to the east, Bosnia with its unique blend of Islam, Catholicism, and Eastern Orthodoxy to the south. Despite these influences, Croatia has steadfastly aligned itself with the Western world and its civilization. When faced with economic hardships during the 2008 recession, the exodus was not towards the south or east but westward, to Western Europe. The cultural affinities, values, and worldview shared with the West make it a beacon of opportunity.
My educational pursuits, career ambitions, and the university of Falmouth, all lie to the west of my current position. This inclination toward the west is not merely geographical but a reflection of a deeper resonance with the culture, values, and opportunities it presents. While this narrative may carry a touch of sentimentality, I believe it provides a more profound insight into my identity and aspirations.
